Happy New Year

Its 2AM and I havent gone to sleep yet. So Ive been reading other blogs, game reviews for our new Wii (Thanks Mom and Dad!), all about new HDTVs, watching music videos from the 80s, and taking pictures of my sweet gassy girl who can't fall asleep at night...unless she's being held. Lindsay has taken the lead the past few nights, so its Dad's turn.

3 weeks old

Congrats to our little girl on being three weeks old today. She's pulling her head up surprisingly well and looking around more than ever. You can see more eyelashes every day. She's also up to 5.5 lbs. Now if she would just sleep through the night like she does during the day, all would be great.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas y'all!! We have had a nice, relaxing holiday here at home this year. We are so thankful that little Finley is here at home to spend Christmas with us, and not still in the hospital. She has been a great baby! We had a long night last night until about 4 in the morning, and then finally we were able to get some sleep, and Bryson let us sleep in a bit. Luckily he is still young enough that he's not waking up at 5 a.m. on Christmas morning to open presents. We've included a few pictures of the kids from today. We hope you all had a great Christmas too! :)

Bathtime

I know, its been a while. Sorry. We could have written new blogs like "She slept again!" or "Hey, the poop only shot out 3 inches today!" but we decided to wait for something a little more eventful. Like a bath!

During Bryson's first bath, he screamed the whole time. So we were ready for a screamfest, but she did absolutely great.

She smells so much better now and her hair was quite fluffy afterwards.

Yesterday, Papa, Great-Grandma, and Great-Aunt Nanette stopped by to say Hi.

Oh yeah, and she slept today. :)

Poo

No, not that Pooh. I'm talking baby poo, which itself is really harmless. Sure it stinks and isn’t pleasant to look at, but most of the time it’s just found in a diaper in a steady state. If you’re one of the lucky parents to see it actually emerging from the bottom of your son/daughter it looks like soft serve ice cream. (Chocolate, not the vanilla). Nice and slow. OK, so just slow. Today, I took off Finley’s diaper to see a small spattering of the soft serve. The thought of, “Hey, that’s not very much. I wonder if some more might OH MY GOSH!” Before I could finish my original thought, the poo came flying. This is not an exaggeration…it flew 4 feet from the source onto everything. That would be the nearby comforter on our bed, the sheets, the carpet below, my arm, and the once-sanitary wipes. Thankfully the dogs that are our shadow the entire day and won’t leave our feet decided to find something better to do. It was one of those life events that when it happens, you just are in shock. "Now what?" As Bryson says, “Clean up!” Thankfully she was done. Just as I was done with the decontamination, Lindsay called, “Hey. What are you doing?” “You’ll never believe this…” I said.

Sleeping...

We caught this picture of Finley sleeping in the Boppy today. It reminded us of a picture of Bryson sleeping in the Boppy when he was a little baby. We decided to do a side by side comparison since they both liked to sleep with their little fists up by their head. They have quite a resemblance, Finley is just a little daintier with a lot more hair!

2 weeks old!

Today Finley is 2 weeks old, already! Time flies so fast with little ones. We are so happy that she was home with us so quickly, and we're slowly adjusting to a family of 4. She is still eating well and sleeping well, and is starting to become much more alert now. We let Bryson hold his little sister for the first time today, and he was very proud. He looked at her amazed and kept smiling big. It was fun to see him excited about little Finley!

The Checkup

Yesterday Finley and Lindsay went to see the wonderful Dr. Dawson to check on the progress of Finley's weight and skin color. We are happy to say that she went from 4 lbs. 12 oz. on Friday to 4lbs. 15 oz. on Monday. A perfect match to the 1 oz. per day that the NICU doctor wanted to see. So as Finley is sleeping now, she should be right at 5 lbs. Such good news. Her jaundice is also non-existent as she now has a normal skin color. We can also tell she is growing up as she is becoming more and more alert during the day (You can read this to also say she isn't sleeping as much as she was!) It was bed at 8:30 tonight in preparation for the long night ahead.

Tomorrow, our little girl will be 2 weeks old. Where does the time go?

Getting Clean

Yesterday was a relaxing day. We slept in as much as we could and then watched movies and enjoyed each others company. Later yesterday evening we went driving around for a bit and looked at Christmas lights. We wanted to take Bryson to the Trail of Lights this year, but don't think it's a good idea since we've been told to avoid public in general for a bit with Finley. So, we settled on driving around, and he loved seeing the Santas everywhere. Finley slept during the ride and was a good little girl.

When we got home we decided to give both kids a bath, Finley's being a sponge bath since her umbilical cord still hasn't fallen off yet. She did really well, and after washing her hair, it dried quickly, and quite spikey. We took a few pictures, and Bryson tried to have spikey hair like his sister with his lion towel. He gave Finley a sweet kiss goodnight.

Trying to relax

Finley has been home for 24 hours and it seems like she slept for 23 of it. Bryson has still been very supportive of everything and is even throwing diapers away in the trash for us. This was the second night of her sleeping with us and its been tough adjusting to the feed-every-three-hour schedule. We are trying to sneak in a nap whenever possible. Lindsay was able to get some time with Finley on the couch and Mike went down for a nap with Bryson for about 30 minutes. So far, so good.

We're Home!

....and our life as 4 under the same roof begins. We were told earlier this morning that we'd be able to take Finley home with us, and it was exactly what we wanted to hear. We were ready to get away from the hospital and to stop driving back and forth day after day. We are so glad to be home together, and are excited about our new adventures. Before we left, they had checked her bilirubin level (for the jaundice) and it was still up a bit, but not dangerously, and it had come down a bit from the previous day. They felt it was safe for her to go home. We were given lots of discharge instructions and some preemie education upon leaving the hospital. It will be a little while before Finley is able to venture out much or have many visitors. They want to keep her at a minimal risk for infection since her immune system could be more sensitive with being a preemie. We went by the pediatrician's office on the way home to get a baseline weight on her on their scale, and are to go back on Monday for another weight check and also a check of her bilirubin level to see if the jaundice has decreased any more.

Here is Miss Finley all dressed and buckled up in her car seat ready to get the heck out of there!

Bryson met his sister for the first time today, and you could tell he was very excited to meet the little baby named Finley that we have told him so much about, but you could also tell that he was a little unsure of things when she was in the car going home with us. Since we got home he has been a little bit smitten over her. He has tried to give her her pacifier back, and tried to assist Mommy with holding a bottle for Finley too. There has also been a few times that she has made noises and he tells her "it's okay baby". I think they'll get along for now, but check back on that one in a few days and we'll see where we're at. :)

We are so happy to have our little girl home, and will keep giving updates as the days go by at home.

Finley's going home!

The doctor just told us that we can take her home today. Words can't describe how excited we are. We'll post pictures of Bryson meeting his sister for the first time later today.

Happy Little Sunshine

Today was another good day. We were told we 'might' get to take her home today, and thought there was a great chance of that, but her bilirubin levels (from the jaundice) had gone back up just a bit, and so they asked us to room in here at the hospital tonight instead, and then we will hopefully be bringing her home with us tomorrow. So, Mike and I are at the hospital tonight, and don't mind it all that much since we are getting to spend time with Finley all night. It is just so nice to be with her. The light coming from her back in this picture is a bili blanket. It is a blanket with a light in it that fits up against her skin. It is like the light she was under before for the jaundice, but just a different style. She fed well earlier and is sleeping soundly right now. We took Bryson to Granna's house tonight to spend the night, and it is his first away from home somewhere without us, so we're hoping he'll do okay. He's stayed without us at our house before, but not ever anywhere else. So far, so good.

Today Finley also had her hearing screen, and passed with flying colors. Here she is with those big head phones on for the screening.

She sure is happy that Mommy and Daddy are staying with her tonight. That, or just a little gassy ;)

We'll update again tomorrow as soon as we know something and get a few pictures in for the day. Thanks to all of you for checking back. We love knowing that we have people reading along and checking in on our happy little sunshine.

All Dressed Up

Today Mommy went to visit and got to talk to the doctor that is working on Finley's case. She says she is doing great, and Finley was up in weight a few ounces to 4 pounds 9 ounces now. She asked if we would be ready for her tomorrow if she came home. She kind of smiled when she said it, and just asked if we were prepared with preemie clothes and other things we might need for her. I happily told her yes! So...she could possibly be coming home tomorrow, but if not will most likely be home by Friday. We are stocked on clothes thanks to Finley's 2 aunts and grandparents, and Mommy made a short shopping trip today too. The outfit I put her in today in this picture was a preemie, and she still is swallowed up in it a bit. We are going to get our last full nights rest for probably the next few years. But that really doesn't matter, because we are just so in love with our new little bundle :)

New Room

Today when we got to the hospital Finley had been moved to a new bed. They directed us where she was now and said that she was in the new bay where "the babies that are getting ready to go home are". How sweet that is to hear! :) When I walked in it was much quieter, and there were only about 4 babies that I could see. Finley was in her own little bed, like the kind that you have when you have a term baby rooming in with you. She was just bundled up laying there so peacefully. Mommy even got to just pick her up out of the bed herself since there are minimal wires now to hold her down. We are just waiting for her to eat more and gain weight steadily before she comes home. I have great faith that she will do this quickly. She has proven to be a strong little girl so far. She nursed well today, almost better than taking a bottle, which was so nice of her to make it easy on Mommy. She is holding her temperature well now too. I felt bad because the nurse had to change her pants right before we got there because Finley had pooped all over her. Glad it wasn't me, but glad to hear that she's pooping good! HA! We both got to enjoy holding her for a bit today since Bryson was in preschool this morning having a good time himself. Aunt Courtney came by the hospital on her lunch break since we were there and actually got to hold her for a few minutes too. We can't wait to see her again tomorrow. Best case scenario would be that she would be home before the weekend, but most likely will be home before Christmas for sure. Of course, they still have not said this to us, but I have a good feeling it will happen.

She just gets better and better

Today Mommy went to visit Finley by herself and to drop off more milk for the growing little girl. Daddy stayed behind today to play with Bryson, and tomorrow the both of us will get to go visit for a while since Bryson will be at preschool in the morning. We are really looking forward to our visit together again. Today was another great day for little Finley. When I got there, the nurse told me that she had been bottle feeding all night, and then asked me if I'd like to try and nurse her while I was there. I thought it would be a while before this happened, but am so excited that they let us try so soon. She latched on, but kept falling asleep and didn't eat much. They say it is hard to keep preemies awake during feedings since they sleep so much at first from being so small. I know that it's going to be a longer process than it ever was with Bryson, but I am up for the challenge, and I know eventually Finley and I will get the process down together. After we tried nursing, they went ahead and gave her food through the bottle. They said she is still at 30 mL feedings, but that she is unrestricted, so she can eat as much as she wants above that amount.

While I was there, the nurse got the orders from the doctor for the day that she was waiting on, and let me know the good news that Finley would be losing her IV within a few hours and that she also had to no longer be under the photo light therapy for the jaundice. So, 2 huge improvements just in the few hours that I was there. We are so proud of her!! So, now she can be bundled like the rest of the newborns and is slowly losing the wires that connect her to the machines. The last few will be there until she leaves the hospital. They will need to do a 12 hour sleep study to make sure that her monitors do not show any problem areas. They haven't said when this will be, and they still haven't said when they are thinking about sending her home, but my gut feeling tells me that it will be within a week and a half, if not sooner. She is just doing so good. Of course, I will not get my hopes up, but I'm feeling like this will be the case, and I could not be happier. This is how I left her today :)

Our Fantastic Furball

Today was another great day for little Finley! We got a call this morning from the doctors saying that Finley was not really needing the IV anymore, and so once they were finished with what was in they probably would not need to continue it. They also had upped her feedings now to 30 mL at a time. We are so excited! They say that her bilirubin level is still high (from the jaundice) and that as she starts to eat more, she will have more bowel movements, and therefore her bilirubin level will then decrease. It is excreted some through bowel movements, so it is really encouraging that she is starting to eat more. Hopefully she'll get the jaundice light off of her soon! She is still eating some through bottle, and some through tube. They say she does well with the bottle, but she tires pretty quickly and has a hard time staying at task eating on the bottle.

We went to see her this afternoon for a few hours and met Lindsay's mom there for a bit too. They let us hold her for 30 minutes outside of the light, so we had to take turns. When we got there she had been bathed and the IV from her head was no longer in place! We were so happy to see a head free of wires :) They did place one in her hand, but said it probably wouldn't be used after today. We sure do have a fantastic little furball!!!

Eating like a big girl

Today was our last day in the hospital. We were excited to return to our home and Bryson, but sad to leave Finley alone. We both shed a few tears on our way out of the NICU, but a really exciting event happened before we left. She shed the feeding tube in exchange for the bottle! She ate 10mL right in front of our face! She did so well and we are so proud of her.

Lindsay just called the NICU to see how our little girl is doing and there is even more progress! Finley has been upped to 20mL of milk and has had the caffeine and anitbiotic removed from her diet. She has also increased her weight from 4lbs 4oz to 4lbs 8oz. Its normal for a baby to lose 10% of their body weight a few days after birth. So she is moving in the right direction. We are really trying to not get our hopes up, but it seems like each time we check on her something positive comes out of it.

Dad's turn

It was finally Dad's turn. We made our way to the NICU around 1AM to see Finley again. We showed up and she was still doing really well. There was an instant where a nurse came in quickly because of some alarms going off, but she dismissed a sleep apnea episode with an error in the measuring instruments. The other nurse agreed as her pulse was reading higher than her heartbeat. They readjusted the pads and everything resumed to normal. She began to get frustrated, but I think it was time to eat. Finley ate 10mL of milk through the feeding tube and calmed down almost immediately. Dad attempted to change a diaper, but its so different than a 2 year old. The nurse had to redo it, but Dad's feelings weren't hurt. It was then the moment I have waited for...I got to sit down and hold my daughter. We talked about a lot of things and she opened her eyes and watched me. After a little while, she fell asleep. I could tell it was where she needed to be because all of her measured levels were perfect. Sounds cliche, but I could have stayed that way for hours. After about 20 minutes, it was getting really late and our morning was to start at 6AM, so we reluctantly let the nurse put her back. Its going to be very difficult not being able to walk down the hall and be with her in 10 minutes. She's doing so well. I really want her home for Christmas. Speaking of home, we have been given the "all-clear" from the doc and we can go home today. We'll be back tomorrow to see our little girl.

Making Progress

December 7, 2007
Today was a good day. A day of many small steps. We went to the NICU around 9AM to see Finley under the bright lights. Her billirubin levels were a bit low and jaundice was going to set in. We heard she was going to stay under this light for a while. Her eyes were protected from the light with her fancy sunglasses. The light was so bright that it played some pretty interesting tricks with the camera.

With the bright lights, we were able to get a good shot of how furry she is. Not only does she have a great head of hair, but she has some nice fuzz on her arms.

The REALLY good news of the morning was that she was totally off the oxygen. She had nothing but real air again. It seems like there are baby steps happening everywhere. Some good, some bad, but there is constantly something new with Finley, and it is all pleasant at the moment.

The second time we went back to see her today they actually removed the oxygen tank out of the room stating that she wouldn't be needing it anymore at all most likely.

That was so encouraging, and then they asked if Lindsay would like to hold her with skin to skin contact that they also like to call "kangaroo therapy". It is good for Finley and great for Mommy's milk supply. So, Lindsay and Finley were extremely relaxed and loving every moment of holding each other and feeling each other's heart beats. She is such a little blessing! They also had upped her dosage of feedings from 5 ml to 10 ml per feeding. Hopefully she'll be plumping up and getting stronger at every feeding.

The third time we went up to the NICU today we took Aunt Court & Uncle Nick as they had brought us dinner to the hospital and wanted to go in for a visit. Lindsay and Courtney went in first to see Finley and while they were in there the nurse had Lindsay check Finley's temperature, change a diaper, and then they fed her through an IV and told us that they'd be taking her tubing out so that she only gets it put in right now for feedings until she will be bottle feeding off of Mommy's pumped milk. She is just amazing!! She got her feeding of Mommy's milk before they removed the tube and then swaddled her and handed her over to Mommy to rock for a bit. We are so excited that we are getting to touch her and get to know her better, and can't wait to have her home. It was time for a shift change when Lindsay had to hand her back over, but we asked if we came back later if Daddy could hold her, and they said "sure!" so we are waiting to go back up there now. We can't wait to see her again!
